Phone scam uses Jackson library number to dupe residents - MLive.com

JACKSON, MI – Phone scammers have stepped up their game in Jackson County, calling residents to pay overdue library fines from the phone number of Jackson’s Carnegie Library.

While the caller ID may show the library's number (517-788-4087), it is a scam call, Jackson District Library officials said.

"The Jackson District Library does not take payments over the phone or ask for account information from our patrons over the phone," JDL Assistant Director Jason Shoup said in a news release. "We're asking that all our patrons please do not give anyone this information that asks for it via a phone call."

JDL does make automated calls to patrons about overdue payments, but won’t call people personally, like what’s happening with these scam calls, the news release said. JDL officials are working with their phone service provider to fix the issue.

If you receive such a call, ask the caller to identify themselves and ask for as much information as possible and then report it to law enforcement, the library advised.
